Virginia's New Governor Makes History as First Female Governor

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen seventy-four state executives, each one of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's history.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US representative and Central Intelligence Agency operative triumphed with a election strategy that stressed economic pressures and deliberately targeted Donald Trump's policies rather than the person.

Beginnings and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at age 13. Her father was an military serviceman who later pursued a career in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a diploma in French literature. Upon completing her studies, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before turning to a life of service.

“I was raised knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she shared with followers at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she handled involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She executed court mandates, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in counter-terrorism cases, working covertly and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a globe and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we chose to pivot from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was correct. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in her home state, she volunteered with an advocacy organization, which combats gun violence, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to campaign for the House, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had won the seventh district in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my member of Congress repeatedly oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to do something. So for the record: I was victorious.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she quickly became linked to the moderate Democrats, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious lawmakers. She prioritized less visible matters: expanding broadband to the countryside, fighting narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for working with Republicans and was often cited as the most cooperative representative of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she believed turned off moderate voters, cautioning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in swing areas.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would not seek re-election for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her platform centred on ideas of public service, support for education and infrastructure and defense of governing systems. Her intelligence experience lent her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation rather than a job.

Election Victory

This helped her to counter Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who maintained that communities should determine whether trans youth can participate in school athletics, cast her opponent as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the state's voters.
