While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office. “Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.” The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House. The swine, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A Peaceful Retirement The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement. “The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message. “It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.” Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
