Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and a second season already in development—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus. Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both. “The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.” “We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in. A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus? So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way. “We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.” On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.” Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings? “I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling. Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
