Sovereign to Share Personal Statement on Illness in TV Address

King Charles has taped a personal message concerning his experience with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's fundraising drive, run by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.

The royal household confirmed the King would discuss his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a recorded address on this Friday at 8pm UK time.

The recording, filmed within Clarence House recently, will stress the critical nature of cancer screening checks to ensure more people detect the illness at an initial point.

This will be a uncommon insight on the health of the Sovereign, who has been receiving ongoing care since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. Analysts suggest doubtful the King will identify his particular diagnosis.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The annual charity initiative each year collects money for medical research and patient care and urges people to get health assessments to boost the chances of an timely detection.

The King's relative openness about his health challenge, and managing the disease, has been intended to increase understanding and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be taken a step further with this unusual direct participation.

So far the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, preserving a busy schedule despite his frequent sessions of care, and he seems not to have wanted to be defined by his illness.

The past twelve months has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, taking several foreign visits, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and welcoming the biggest number of inward state visits to the UK for a generation, including the German president in recent days.

The Televised Evening Programme

Friday evening's charity show on Channel 4, featuring well-known figures including a team of famous hosts, will encourage people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.

Each presenter have been affected by cancer - McCall said recently she had undergone surgery for breast cancer, while another presenter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously spoken about his parent, who had stomach cancer and then later another illness.

The broadcast will target the estimated millions of people in the UK who health organisations state are not compliant with national health programmes, with an website to let people check if they are eligible for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an attempt to clarify screenings and demonstrate the benefit of timely identification there will be a direct feed from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"The goal is to reduce the stigma out of health checks and show everyone that they are not isolated in this," stated one of the hosts.

Available Health Checks

At present in the UK, there are several key NHS cancer screening programmes - for specific cancers - offered to eligible individuals.

A emerging lung cancer screening programme is also being phased in for individuals at high risk of contracting the illness, focusing on people in a specific age bracket, who have a smoking history or have smoked in the past.

Men may request prostate cancer checks, but there is no national programme in place.

Charitable Impact

The charity campaign, which has generated £113m since 2012, is funding 73 medical projects encompassing 13,000 patients.

King Charles, in a address for dignitaries at a gathering for cancer charities in earlier this year, had spoken of acknowledging the "daunting and at times alarming reality" for those diagnosed and their families.

But he stated his personal journey of managing cancer had revealed that "the darkest moments of disease can be brightened by the support of carers," as he commended those who looked after individuals with the illness.

The Palace has not disclosed what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has undergone. The King's cancer was detected after he had had a prostate procedure.
