The English side has already lost fast bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and Jofra Archer to a side strain on the current trip. A replacement bowler was brought into the squad to provide backup. Atkinson struggled during the first two matches, managing only three wickets. He was dropped for the Adelaide match, before being recalled for the fourth Test as Archer's replacement. The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, bagging two scalps during the host's first knock, then making 28 with the bat as one of just three teammates who passed ten runs. After bowling one over late on the first day, he came back on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper. Yet, at the end of that over, he bowled a variation to the batsman and promptly felt his left hamstring.
