The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
