Igor Jesus Fires Twice as Nottingham Forest Conclude Europa League Campaign with Victory over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives hosts a first-half lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts Forest in control.
  • Striker nets again with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • The midfielder caps a great display with a penalty.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a small chance of making the top eight, even though they needed several results to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can navigate the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the upright with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – coached by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – Jesus firing an effort in at the back post for his tenth strike of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort past the goalkeeper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive McAtee converted a penalty after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the box on the winger.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive one."

Team Breakdown: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

This double also means he has got three goals in his previous two outings and the threat of competition for his position in attack could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this match from the stands.

This development may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, delivering two superb finishes and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

These encouraging performances will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just go and show your quality.

"James was excellent and Dan was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
