Active Aero & Overtake Mode - Understanding F1's Updated Regulatory Language

The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the new language that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The sport is introducing what is potentially the most significant technical shift in its long history next season, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the mandatory use of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, necessitating key advancements in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, competitors will tactically deploy battery power – including during hot laps – to extract the best performance.

Wide-ranging research were undertaken with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terminology would improve understanding of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to render a series of complex features of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been discarded in preference for descriptive names that directly explain the actual function of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that racers will have more power to determine tactics regarding power usage, regeneration, and conservation.

The upcoming changes feature a range of settings that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to improve the audience's understanding of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a competitor is less than a second the leading car to facilitate an overtake.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It provides the pilot maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the straights for reduced drag and increased velocity, and angling down in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in sections where only reduced throttle is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter than this year, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will employ active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to reduce drag and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in energy output by the petrol engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical under present rules.

The hybrid system is made less complex through the removal of the MGU-H, the complicated and costly component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be required to run on fully sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
