A Moving Occasion when Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"He is an excellent coach that knows the game back to front, and that's what matters most.

"However, as the Blues' pioneering black player, it would be dishonest to claim this moment does not affect me."

These were the words of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their new head coach after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the multi-club BlueCo which also controls Chelsea.

There have been a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including those in interim roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he was raised and played locally, he knows the local fans," added Canoville.

"When kids see someone like Liam managing their club, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that fights for what's right… that's powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Data Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager back in the nineties and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current top flight gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from black heritage.

However, analysis by the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At senior coaching level, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of talent that exists within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to persist in work hard to break those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time English managers presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining major leagues regarding national managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British managers from an academy background are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's really inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone get that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term deal with the Blues.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's pioneering black boss in Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
